Terriers Claim 77-56 Triumph Over Rhode Island in Home Opener
Nov. 13, 2007
Sparked by junior Christine Kinneary's career-high 17 points, the Boston University women's basketball team (2-0) rolled to a 77-56 victory over Rhode Island (1-1) at Case Gym on Tuesday evening. The Terriers also got a big night out of senior Kasey Devine with 14 points and nine rebounds, while juniors Jesyka Burks-Wiley and Amarachi Umez-Eronini notched 10 points apiece. Kinneary (Plainedge, N.Y.), who earned America East's Player of the Game honors, shot 8-for-10 from the field and dished out a game-high six assists. Devine (North Kingstown, R.I.) sunk eight three throws and was 3-for-5 from the field, en route to her second consecutive double-digit scoring game. Umez-Eronini (Washington, D.C.) earned three blocks and seven rebounds - both career highs, while Burks-Wiley (Kansas City, Mo.) was just one rebound shy of a double-double. As a team, the Terriers shot an impressive 53.1 percent (26-for-49) and were 18-for-21 from the charity stripe. BU's bench outscored URI's by a 24-10 margin and the Terriers earned 11 second-chance points in the game. The Terriers took the early lead and never looked back, holding the Rams to just three points through the first six minutes of the contest. During that time BU went on an 11-3 run. BU earned its largest lead of the game when sophomore Aly Hinton (Richboro, Pa.) sunk both of her free-throw attempts to give the Terriers a commanding 36-17 advantage. BU carried a 42-24 lead into the locker rooms at halftime when Devine made the easy lay-up with less than a second before time expired.
In the second half, the Terriers picked up where they left off in the first stanza, opening up the lead to as much as 25 points when Umez-Eronini went in for the lay-up to move the score to 49-24. The Rams slowly chipped away at the deficit, coming as close as 11 points, 63-52, with 5:09 remaining, however, Umez-Eronini provided five of the Terriers' final 14 points to bring the score to 77-56. The Terriers will now turn their focus to No. 16 Ohio State on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 4:00 p.m. at Agganis Arena. |
