Women's Outdoor Track and Field Takes Third at America East; Men Place Fifth

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Boston University men’s outdoor track and field team completed the second and final day of competition at the America East Championships on Sunday afternoon. After sitting in last place through the first day of competition, the team fought back, placing fifth with 82 points. The meet was highlighted by the 4x800-meter relay team, who broke a conference record en route to winning the event.

Seniors Barry Graham and Matt Howard earned their team nine points in the 400 meters, as Graham placed third with a time of 48.36 seconds and Howard took sixth with a time of 49.68 seconds. In the 800 meters, junior Jake Laroe placed fifth, crossing the finish line in 1:53.25, adding four more points to BU’s total.

In the 1,500 meters, three Terriers placed in the top ten. Junior David Proctor paced the group, winning the event with a time of 3:51.41. Fellow junior Pat Hoye finished sixth with a time of 3:56.38, and freshman Eric Ashe placed ninth with a time of 3:59.12. Sophomore Tom McLean also competed, earning the 12th-place spot with a time of 4:08.37.

In the 10,000-meter race, senior Phil Shaw finished third with a time of 32:15.49, finishing just behind the New Hampshire duo of Andrew Lawson and Jordan Horwitz.

Ashe placed high for his team again, taking second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:03.48, reaching a NCAA provisional mark. Senior Greg Sinnott also competed, placing ninth with a time of 9:31.96.

The team of sophomore David Polgar, Proctor, Laroe and Hoye combined to win the 4x800-meter relay, setting a new conference record. The group won the race with a time of 7:38.81, breaking the previous conference mark of 7:40.72, set in 1999 by the Terriers.

BU took fourth in both the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays. In the first, the team of sophomore David Barth, freshman Mac-Alan Gerard, junior Keith Buchanan and freshman Alex Baillargeon finished with a time of 43.25 seconds. In the 4x400, Baillargeon, Graham, Buchanan and Howard, finished with a time of 3:20.66.

Junior Dan Martin earned a couple of top-five finishes, taking fourth in the shot put with a distance of 14.29 meters, and fourth in the discus, reaching a distance of 46.66. In the triple jump, Gerard finished eighth, reaching a distance of 13.39.

In the javelin, junior Andy Beatman placed sixth with a distance of 53.75 meters. Freshman Chase Carnahan also competed, earning 11th with a distance of 47.31.

Over in the decathlon, junior Greg Daggett soared during the second day of competition, placing second overall with a point total of 6096.

The men will next split up to compete in both the IC4A/ECAC Championships and the New England Championships next weekend.
