DURHAM, N.C. - The Boston University men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams traveled to Durham, N.C., to compete in the annual Duke Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Junior David Proctor led the way for the men, earning a first-place finish in the 1500 meters. On the women’s side freshman Whitney Ford paved the way with a couple of top-five finishes.
Proctor finished the 1500 meters in three minutes, 44.28 seconds, beating out 58 other competitors, to give BU its only first-place finish.
Two others would earn top-ten finishes in the track events, as freshman Mark Mazzochette placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 57.80. Senior Barry Graham also proved a tough competitor, placing tenth in the 400 meters with a time of 49.95. Four other Terriers competed in the event.
Sophomore Kodjo Wilder and freshman Eric Ashe just missed the top ten list, both earning 11th-place finishes in their respective events. Wilder competed in the 100-meter dash, finishing with a time of 11.77, while Ashe ran the 3000-meter steeplechase, crossing the finish line at 9:24.75.
In the field events, junior Andy Beatman placed highest for his team. Beatman finished sixth in the javelin, throwing a distance of 55.18 meters. Freshman Chase Carnahan also competed in the event, finishing 20th with a throw of 44.49.
In the discus throw, two Terriers finished one after another. Junior Dan Martin earned a 14th-place finish with a distance of 42.24 meters, while freshman Logan Moore finished 15th, with a throw of 41.59.
On the women’s side, it was Ford who paced her team, earning a second-place in the triple jump with a distance of 12.19 meters, coming in just behind Toledo’s April Williams who took the event with a distance of 13.18. In the triple jump, Ford took fifth place, leaping a distance of 5.53 meters.
In the track events, freshman Ebony Cotterell continued on with her successful season. Cotterell, who entered the meet coming off two-first place finishes at the Tufts Invitational, earned a sixth-place finish in the 200 with a time of 25.37.
Sophomore Rebecca Marshburn earned her team another top-ten finish, placing eighth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.11. She also finished high in the 100-meter hurdles, earning the sixth-place spot with a time of 14.97 seconds.
In the 1,500-meter run, graduate student Claire Robson finished tenth in the run, completing the race in 4:30.29. Freshman Sarah Mosser joined her in the event, placing 19th wit a time of 4:35.99.
The Terriers will continue south next weekend, when they travel Athens, Ga., to compete in the Georgia Invitational on April 14.
