BOSTON - During the first day of competition at the Valentine Invitational, seniors Nick Goodman and Matt Howard led the way for the Boston University men’s track and field team with top-ten finishes in the mile and 400-meter dash, respectively. The annual meet draws hundreds of competitors from across the nation.

Goodman led the Terriers with a fourth-place finish in the mile run, completing the race in 4:03.97, just missing out on breaking his personal-best time of 4:03.13. From the start, Goodman quickly put himself in the lead, holding the second spot behind Boston College’s Patrick Mellea for the first half of the race. Goodman pushed his way to the front of the group during the sixth lap, before falling into fourth, where he stayed through the finish line.

Howard also recorded a top-ten finish for the Terriers, running the 400 meters in 48.33 seconds. Howard placed in front of 151 athletes, including Basil Campbell who entered the race a first seed in his section.

In the pole vault, freshman Logan Moore led the way for his team, tying for 13th place, reaching a height of 4.10 meters. Moore set a personal best for himself. His previous high was 3.95 meters, which he set during BU’s home quad-meet on Jan. 17, and met again during a multi-team meet on Feb. 5.

Senior Steve Boursiquot placed 25th in the long jump with a distance of 6.27 meters, and in the shot put, junior Dan Martin reached a distance of 13.47 meters, placing 21st.

The women will close out the Valentine Invitational on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m., when the pole vault starts the day for the field events, and the 5000 meters begins competition for the track events.
