James, Proctor Earn America East Track and Field Honors
BOSTON - After both breaking university records during the Terrier Invitational on Saturday afternoon, juniors Tahari James and David Proctor earned America East honors for their standout performances, as announced by the league on Tuesday. James was named Field Performer of the Week, while Proctor earned Track Performer of the Week. James competed in both the long jump and the triple jump, taking first and second place, respectively. In the long jump, James leaped to a distance of 20-feet, 3.75 inches, breaking a university record. She was the sole competitor to break 20-feet in the finals and by doing so, reached the provisional standard for the NCAA Championships. In the triple jump, James produced another provisional standard with a distance of 42-feet, 2.75 inches. James is now ranked eight in the nation for the long jump and 11th for the triple jump. In the past year James has broken three indoor university records. On top of her most recent accomplishment, James set a new record in the triple jump at the New England Championships last year with a distance of 43-feet, 1.5 inches, and was also part of the 4x400-meter relay team at the ECAC Championships in 2006, that set a record time with a 3:48.42 run. Proctor was awarded by the conference for his stellar performance in the mile run. Proctor ran the mile in 3:59.14, breaking a university and facility record, and setting a new NCAA standard for the 2006-07 indoor season. BU’s previous record for the mile was set in 1981 by Tro Billings, who ran the mile in 4:00.4. The first-place finish propelled Proctor to number one in the NCAA rankings for the mile, and also places him first in the United Kingdom by two seconds. James and Proctor are joined in the national rankings by seniors Marisa Ryan and Nick Goodman, who both happened to earn America East Track Performers of the Week two weeks ago. Ryan is ranked tenth in the 3000 meters with a time of 9:31.48, and Goodman joins Proctor in the mile, ranking 14th with a personal-best time of 4:03.13. The Terriers return to the Track and Tennis Center on Monday, Feb. 5, where they will face off against Providence, Boston College, New Hampshire, Northeastern and MIT. Events are scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
