BOSTON - The Boston University women's cross country team had a strong showing in its first competition of the season, with four runners finishing in the top five positions at Franklin Park on Friday. The men's side also posted impressive numbers, taking two of the top three times in the event.

The weather certainly played a factor in slowing down the athletes' times, but junior Andrea Walkonen made a triumphant return to the team, completing the 5k course in 17:46. Walkonen had been away from running for a substantial period of time before the race, but came back to the team in great form, finishing one minute and 17 seconds ahead of the next competitor, Brown's Abby Hinds (19:03).

The rest of the women's team persevered through the heat as well. Freshman Emma Reid placed third overall with a 19:05 finish, and senior Ann Wighton (19:06) and sophomore Sarah Mosser (19:23) completed the race soon thereafter to seal a victory for the Terriers in the season's first event.

The BU women swept their events, felling Brown (25-32), Harvard (19-36), Manhattan (17-38) and Marist (16-39).

On the men's side, senior David Proctor and sophomore Eric Ashe opened the season with a second- and third-place finish, respectively. Proctor (26:12) and Ashe (26:21) finished just seconds behind leader Girma Segni (26:09) of Marist on the 8k course.

However, with four men finishing in the top 10 and seven in the top 17, Brown took the day with a 25-34 victory over the Terriers. Marist defeated Boston University with a 25-32 win, but BU earned a win against Manhattan (23-32) and a tie with Harvard (28-28).

The Terriers next event will be the Ted Owens Invitational hosted by Central Connecticut State on Saturday, Sept. 15. At last year's event, both the men and women's teams finished first place, with six Terrier women placing in the top ten runners.
