Detwiler Claims Title at Wilkes Open; Ferrandino Places Second
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - In his collegiate debut, freshman A.J. Detwiler claimed the 157-pound title to lead the way for the Boston University wrestling team at the Wilkes Open on Thursday afternoon. Sophomore Carlo Ferrandino placed second at 141 and four other Terriers earned multiple victories. After opening his collegiate career with a narrow 7-6 victory over Virginia's Kyle Artusio, Detwiler pinned a pair of opponents before advancing to the 157 final with a 3-2 triumph over Penn State's Josh Rohler. In the title bout, Detwiler posted a 7-2 win against Joe Strittmatter (Pitt.-Johnstown). Ferrandino, after an opening-round bye, was on the offensive throughout his match with Penn State's Mike Eagan before coming away with a 25-11 major decison. After advancing to the final with a 15-8 victory over Pitt.-Johnstown's Shane Valko, Ferrandino dropped a 13-7 decision to Penn's Rick Rappo in the championship. Freshmen Abbie Rush (125) and Alex Brown (165) and sophomores Eli Vidal (174) and Mike Cubillos (149) all earned two victories on the day. Two Terriers will compete in this weekend's Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill., as sophomore Mike Roberts and junior Joey Whitaker will wrap up BU's tournament schedule before the team opens its dual schedule on Jan. 12.
