BOSTON - The Boston University wrestling team will join the Colonial Athletic Association for the upcoming 2001-02 season. The new 12-team conference was formed through the merger of the East Coach Wrestling Association and the CAA.

The newly expanded league will consist of former ECWA rivals Hofstra University, Rider University, Drexel University, Sacred Heart University, Wagner College, and Boston College, as well as long time CAA members James Madison University, Old Dominion University, Campbell University, defending CAA champion George Mason University. Binghamton University, will als join the league and will be competing at the Division 1 level for the first time.

The new conference will send 27 wrestlers to the 2002 NCAA Division I Championships at the Pepsi Arena March 21-23 at Albany, NY.

The CAA Championships are scheduled for March 8-9 at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA.

The Terriers enter the 2001-02 season on the heels of an injury-riddled season in which they compiled a 6-9 overall record, 3-4 in the ECWA. The squad includes two wrestlers selected to the CAA pre-season All-Rookie Team for the upcoming season. Freshman Joe Rivera is set to compete in the 133-pound weight class, and freshman Rayes Gonzales is slated to compete at 149-pounds.

The Terriers will kick off their season on November 10th, when they travel to Binghamton, NY, to compete in the Colonial Open.
