Roberts Claims CAA Title at 149; Terriers Finish Sixth
FAIRFAX, Va. - Sophomore Mike Roberts claimed the 149-pound title at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships on Saturday to earn his first trip to the NCAA Championships. Roberts upset the top two seeds in his bracket, helping the Terriers finish sixth in the 11-team tournament. After stunning top-seeded Mike Parziale of Hostra in the semifinals with a 6-5 victory, Roberts became just the second Terrier to claim an individual CAA title with a 5-3 triumph over second-seeded Mike Kessler of Rider in the championship round. The only other BU grappler to claim a CAA title was Ali Abri, who won the 184-pound championship in 2002 during BU's first year of competition in the CAA. Sophomore Carlo Ferrandino dropped a 14-2 major decision to second-seeded Don Fisch of Rider in the 141-pound semifinals, but rebounded with a pin against fifth-seeded Cory Dunn of Sacred Heart to reach the third-place bout. Ferrandino settled for fourth place after an 11-3 setback against the No. 3 seed, Ryan Williams of Old Dominion. In the 133 semifinals, junior Joey Whitaker dropped a 15-1 major decision to second-seeded Christian Staylor of Old Dominion before suffering a pin in the consolation bracket. Hofstra won its sixth straight CAA title on the strength of seven individual champions, including senior Mike Patrovich, who was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler. Roberts will look to build off his CAA title when he competes at the NCAA Championships on March 15-17 at The Palace of Auburn Hills just outside of Detroit, Mich.
