Three Wrestlers Advance To CAA Semifinals; Terriers in Seventh After Day One
FAIRFAX, Va. - Three Boston University wrestlers are one win away from qualifying for the NCAA Championships after advancing to semifinal round of the Colonial Athletic Association Championships on Friday at George Mason. Junior Joey Whitaker (133) and sophomores Carlo Ferrandino (141) and Mike Roberts (149) will look to advance to the finals of their respective brackets on Saturday morning. The Terriers are in seventh place after day one of the tournament. BU earned 13.5 points in the team standings on Friday, just two points out of fifth-place. Defending champion Hofstra leads with 46 points. Whitaker, seeded third in the 133 bracket, edged sixth-seeded Will Powars of George Maons, 4-3, in the quarterfinals before Ferrandino, also seeded third, moved to the 141 semifinals with an 11-6 triumph over No. 6 James Mitchum of James Madison. As the fourth seed at 149, Roberts became the third straight Terrier to reach the semifinals when he posted a 3-1 sudden-victory decision over No. 5 Mark Cartella of Drexel. Five other Terriers are still alive in their respective consolation brackets, including freshmen Abbie Rush (125) and A.J. Detwiler (174), along with sophomores Mike Cubillos (157), Eli Vidal (184) and Jim Connors (285).
