Wrestling Edged by Sacred Heart in Dual Opener, 22-20
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - A late reversal in the final bout proved to be the difference, as the Boston University wrestling team dropped a tough 22-20 decision at Sacred Heart in its dual opener on Friday evening. Redshirt freshman Mike Roberts earned a pin in his 149-pound match, while freshman Josh Statum recorded a major decision in his dual debut. After the Terriers held a 20-19 lead through nine matches, the dual was decided at 157 pounds. Senior Justin Blumenthal held a lead for the majority of the bout before Sacred Heart's Sherwood Fendryk tied the match at 3-3 and recorded the game-winning reversal with two seconds left in the third period. The night got underway with three straight Boston University wins, as redshirt freshman Chris Tripp (174) posted a major decision in between wins by seniors Zach Johns (165) Tom Sforza (184) create an early 9-0 lead for the visitors. Freshaman Elijah Vidal suffered a fall at 197 before classmate James Connors was on the short end of a technical fall in the heavyweight bout, resulting in a 11-9 edge for the Pioneers. Roberts' pin against Mike Hartman at 3:51 of the 149-pound matchup gave the Terriers the 20-19 lead heading into the final match. The Terriers will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 14, when they visit Brown for duals against American (4 p.m.) and the host Bears (6 p.m.).
