Men's Tennis Loses in America East Finals; Seven Terriers Named All-Conference
The second-seeded Terrier men's tennis team's hopes for an America East title and a subsequent bid to the NCAA Tournament came to an end on Sunday when they bowed to top-seeded Hofstra, 4-1, in the tournament's championship match.
The day left a bittersweet memory for seven B.U. players. While there was the disappointment of losing in the finals, this group was named All-Conference. In singles play, the selections included Ian Carrera (Goleta, CA), Justin Schmidt (LaJola, CA), and Ben Sturner (Chapel Hill, NC). The doubles teams recognized were Chris Ransom (East Brunswick, NJ) and Greg Toon (McGuire Air Force Base, NJ) along with Jacob Glaser (Beaverton, OR) and Josh Holbrook (New Haven, CT).
In Sunday's championship match, the Terriers won two of the three doubles matches to come away with the team point. The winners were Glaser and Holbrook at number one, 8-6, and Ransom and Toon at number three, 8-2.
Unfortunately, Hofstra dominated the singles play and had the title wrapped up with four-of-six wins. In fact, play at numbers one and three singles were suspended after the Flying Dutchmen had assured themselves the win.
In the matches that did count, Glaser lost, 6-3, 7-5, at number two; Ransom lost at number four, 6-4, 6-4; Holbrook lost at number five, 7-5, 6-1; and Sturner lost at number six, 5-7, 6-3, 2-6.
Both Schmidt's match at number one and Carrera's match at number three were suspended.
B.U. earned the right to play for the championship by shutting out seventh-seeded Hartford, 7-0, on Friday and coming back to eliminate Towson, 5-2, on Saturday in a marathon match that ended at 11:45 p.m.
In Friday's win over Hartford, the Terriers had straight-set victories in all six singles matches. Number one Schmidt and number five Holbrook had the toughest matches. Schmidt won 6-4, 7-6 (10-8 in the tiebreaker), while Holbrook prevailed, 7-5, 7-5.
The other winners were Glaser at number two, 6-3, 7-5; Carrera at number three, 6-4, 6-4; Ransom at number four, 6-1, 6-1; and Sturner at number six, 6-1, 6-3.
Then, in the doubles play, Glaser and Holbrook won, 8-6, at number one. Carrera and Schmidt were victorious at number two, 8-3. Lastly, Ransom and Greg Toon (McGuire Air Force Base, NJ) won at number three, 8-6.
Saturday's matchup against Towson was predictably more difficult.
The Terriers won four of their six singles matches, and two of the four wins went to three sets.
Schmidt (7-6, 4-6, 6-3) and Ransom (6-7, 6-4, 6-3) went the limit to win their matches at one and four, respectively. In the meantime, Carrera (6-2, 6-2), at number three, and Holbrook (6-1, 6-3) had an easier time with their opponents.
The only Terriers who lost were Glaser (7-5, 6-4) at number two and Sturner (7-6, 7-6) at number six. Sturner lost both tie breakers in his match, 8-6 and 7-1, respectively.
B.U. won the point in doubles by virtue of winning two of the three matches. Glaser and Holbrook teamed up at number one to post a victory, 8-3. Schmidt and Carrera blanked their opponent, 8-0, at number two doubles. However, Towson won the number three doubles, 8-5, over Ransom and Toon.
