Men's Tennis Team To Play Hofstra For League Title
The second-seeded Terrier men's tennis team will take on top-seeded Hofstra at the University of Vermont on Sunday afternoon for the America East team title. The winner will receive a bid to the NCAA Division 1 Tournament. B.U. earned the right to play for the championship by shutting out seventh-seeded Hartford, 7-0, on Friday and coming back to eliminate Towson, 5-2, on Saturday in a marathon match that ended at 11:45 p.m. In Friday's win over Hartford, the Terriers had straight-set victories in all six singles matches. Number one Justin Schmidt (LaJola, CA) and number five Josh Holbrook (New Haven, CT) had the toughest matches. Schmidt won 6-4, 7-6 (10-8 in the tiebreaker), while Holbrook prevailed, 7-5, 7-5. The other winners were Jacob Glaser (Beaverton, OR) at number two, 6-3, 7-5; Ian Carrera (Goleta, CA) at number three, 6-4, 6-4; Chris Ransom (East Brunswick, NJ) at number four, 6-1, 6-1; and Ben Sturner (Millersville, MD) at number six, 6-1, 6-3. Then, in the doubles play, Glaser and Holbrook won, 8-6, at number one. Carrera and Schmidt were victorious at number two, 8-3. Lastly, Ransom and Greg Toon (McGuire Air Force Base, NJ) won at number three, 8-6. Saturday's matchup against Towson was predictably more difficult. The Terriers won four of their six singles matches, and two of the four wins went to three sets. Schmidt (7-6, 4-6, 6-3) and Ransom (6-7, 6-4, 6-3) went the limit to win their matches at one and four, respectively. In the meantime, Carrera (6-2, 6-2), at number three, and Holbrook (6-1, 6-3) had an easier time with their opponents. The only Terriers who lost were Glaser (7-5, 6-4) at number two and Sturner (7-6, 7-6) at number six. Sturner lost both tie breakers in his match, 8-6 and 7-1, respectively. B.U. won the point in doubles by virtue of winning two of the three matches. Glaser and Holbrook teamed up at number one to post a victory, 8-3. Schmidt and Carrera blanked their opponent, 8-0, at number two doubles. However, Towson won the number three doubles, 8-5, over Ransom and Toon.
