The 1998 Boston University men's tennis team ended the fall portion of their schedule with a 1-4 record.
On September 16 the Terriers began the Rob Miller coaching era at B.U., with a 7-0 victory versus New Hampshire at the Case Center courts. Junior #1 singles Chris Ransom (East Brunswick, NJ) led the way with a 7-5, 6-1 win. Senior Ben Sturner (Millersville, MD), playing at #2 singles, won 6-2, 7-5. Senior Greg Toon (McGuire A.F.B., NJ) took third singles, 6-1, 6-1. Senior Jacob Glaser (Beaverton, OR), freshman Joshua Holbrook (New Haven, CT), and sophomore Tom Booth (Carlsbad, CA) won the number four through six singles slots respectively. Ransom and Glaser won the number-one doubles match, 8-3, and Sturner and Holbrook and junior Rasak-Dean Meelarp (Bloomfield, NJ) and freshman John Koetzle (Dix Hills, NY) down the Wildcats in the second and third doubles, 8-3 and 8-5, respectively.
The following week at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Terriers were defeated 6-1. Holbrook was the lone Terrier to net a win, 6-4, 4-1, at number five singles.
At Boston College on October 1, B.U. suffered its second straight loss,losing to the Eagles 4-2. Ransom and Holbrook picked up wins at number-two singles and number-four singles. Ransom won his match, 6-4, 6-1, and Holbrook held off his opponent, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.
Three days later, B.U. traveled to Ivy League foe Dartmouth. The Big Green proved to be too much for the Terriers in a 9-0 loss.
In the last dual and home match of the 1998 season, the Terriers fell to UMass-Amherst, 4-3. Justin Schmidt (LaJolla, CA) got B.U. in the scoring column with a 6-3, 6-4 win at number one singles. Holbrook took fifth singles, 6-2, 7-6, (8-6) to improve to 3-0 in the number five spot. Glaser won at number six, 6-0, 6-2.
At the New England Championships in Storrs, CT. Holbrook defeated Tim Brennan of Boston College, 6-3, 7-5 to advance to the second round of the B Singles Flight. Holbrook lost to eventual tournament champion Dennis Fabian of Providence, 6-2, 6-3. Glaser advanced to the third round of the C Singles Flight by defeating Chris Markowski of Central Connecticut, 6-3, 6-4, and Nick Wormley of Quinnipiac, 6-1, 6-2. Glaser, also lost to the eventual champion Takashi Zetsu, dropping the match in three sets of 6-3, 6-7, 4-6. The Terrier doubles entry in the second doubles flight advanced to the fourth round, before bowing to champion, Boston College, 8-4.
The following weekend, the Terriers competed in the Cornell Classic in Ithaca, NY. Schimdt advanced to the second round of the A Singles Flight Consolation, where he lost 6-2, 6-2. Holbrook advanced to the semifinals of the B Singles Flight Consolation.
Holbrook was the team's top performer with a 4-1 record in dual matches and a 9-4 mark overall. Jacob Glaser was the other Terrier with four or more wins, finishing with a record of 4-7.
