Men's Swimming And Diving Team Opens Season At Binghamton
BINGHAMTON, NY-The Terrier men's swimming and diving team opened its 2004-05 season on Saturday, Oct. 23, with a tough 141 to 101 loss over host Binghamton University. Despite the loss, there were many highlights for the men during the meet among them the 1-2-3 in both dives. Senior Victor Paguia (Lake Forest, IL), who has been a dominant diver during his collegiate career, led the way by winning both the one- and three-meter events. He scored 244.21 in the former and 293.65 in the latter. Senior James Yon (Pittsfield, MA) took second in both the one- and three-meter dives, scoring 194.48 and 217.60 points, respectively, while sophomores Joseph Mikulka (Suffern, NY) and Craig Fritch (Delaware, OH) rounded out the sweep. Mikula was third at one meters with 193.03 points, and Fritch was third at three meters with 178.77 points. Freshman Greg Dierkson (Yucaipa, CA) and sophomore James Lands (Montclair, NJ) both had first-place finishes, as well, in the 1000 freestyle and 200 butterfly, respectively. Dierkson finished with a time of 10:15.45 in the freestyle, while Lands led with a time of 2:03.21 in the butterfly. Dierkson, Mike Kelly (Fonda, NY), and sophomore Michael Bear (Arlington, VA) had strong second-place finishes at the meet in their events. Kelly finished second in both the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle with times of 22.64 and 49.79, while Dierkson grabbed second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:00.34. Bear finished just behind Dierkson in the 1000 freestyle at 10:15.82, rounding out the top performers of this weekend's meet.
