Kelly Sets Two Records As Terriers Roll Past Vermont
BURLINGTON, VT-Sophomore Mike Kelly (Shrewsbury, NJ) set two pool records in the 50 freestyle and 100 fly and was on the pool record-breaking 200 medley relay to help lead the Terrier men's swimming and diving team to a 219-61 win over host University of Vermont on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 24. En route to improving their overall dual-meet record to 3-4, the Terriers won all 16 events. In fact, in six of the events, they went 1-2-3. Kelly led the way in establishing Forbush Natatorium records in the 50 freestyle and the 100 fly with times of :21.65 and :52.70, respectively. He then teamed with senior Jay Toutant (Madison, WI), freshman Griffin Moodie (Edina, MN), and junior David Brown (Fallbrook, CA) to win the 200 medley relay in the record-breaking time of 3:39.15. The Terriers dominated all the freestyle events, as they went 1-2-3 in the 50, 100, 200, and 500 and also swept the one- and three-meter dives. In the 50, Kelly led the sweep that included runnerup David Brown (:22.85) and third-place finisher senior Ryo Takano (Ardsley, NY). Brown took over the 100 freestyle with a winning time of :50.34. Freshman James Lands (Montclair, NJ) was second in :52.06, while sophomore Brian Patton (Battleground, WA) was third in :52.12. The 200 featured one of the pleasant events of the afternoon as Patton won for the first time this year with a time of 1:52.61. Lands was second in 1:53.26 and sophomore Michael McGrath (Pittsburgh, PA) was third in 1:58.12. The Terriers completed their sweep of the freestyle events in the 500 where freshman Michael Bear (Arlington, VA) turned in a winning time of 5:04.53. He was followed by Takano, who was second in 5:08.85, and senior Brent Bernkrant (Hollywood, FL) in 5:18.28. The Terriers also dominated the one- and three-meter dives as junior Victor Paguia (Lake Forest, IL) won both events to no one's surprise. Undefeated in both events this season, Paguia captured the one-meter dive with 258.98 points and the three-meter with 303.97 points. Freshman Joseph Mikulka (Suffern, NY) finished second in the one-meter event with 187.80 points, while junior James Yon (Pittsfield, MA) was third with 180.30. The two exchanged places in the three-meter dive as Yon was second with 197.55 points and Mikulka was third with 155.85 points. B.U. opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in pool record-breaking time. Then came a win in the 1650 by Baer, who won the first of his two events with a time 17:15.78. Later, he won the 500 freestyle. The Terriers then went 1-2 in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke. Toutant won the backstroke with a time of :56.41, while junior Chris Collins (Phoenix, AZ) was second in :57.74. Then, Moodie won the 100 breaststroke followed by Bernkrant in 1:00.72 and 1:06.22, respectively. Moodie later won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:14.22. After Justin Reid (Cape Elizabeth, ME) won the 200 fly in 2:22.02, the Terriers took 1-2-3 in the one-meter dive. Next up was the 200 backstroke and Toutant and Collins who finished 1-2 in the 100 back, exchanged finishes in the 200 as Collins won in a time of 2:07.60 while Toutant was second in 2:10.86. Before the meet was over the Terriers went 1-2 in the 100 fly behind Kelley's pool record-breaking time of :52.70 followed by McGrath in :58.52. The final individual event was the 400 IM that was one by Lands. As was the case with Patton in the 200 free, this was Lands' first win in his freshman season, and there was excitement on the deck when he touched first in a time of 4:33.12. The Terriers closed out the meet by winning the 200 freestyle relay in 1:29.0. The foursome included Toutant, McGrath, Moodie, and Kelly. "This meet did a lot for us," said head coach Reagh Wetmore. "I was able to move some people around and have them swim events so that they could get qualifying times for the Conference championship. I hope to have everyone swim three individual events as well as one relay. And, we accomplished that in this (Vermont) meet. "Plus, it was a great meet because it gave us four new winners," the coach continued. "James Lands won the 400 IM, Brian Patton won the 200 free, Justin Reid won the 200 fly, and David Brown won the 100 free. It was really nice to see how excited everyone was when those four won their races."
