HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (October 29) -- Junior Chris Bone (Newcastle, England) had a goal and an assist and freshman goalkeeper Matt Smith (Lanchester, England) notched his fifth shutout of the season as the Terrier men's soccer team blanked Hofstra, 2-0, in a game marked by 34 fouls and 10 cards.
The victory enabled the Terriers to take a giant step toward qualifying for the America East post-season tournament. B.U., which is now tied with Northeastern for third place in the league standings, improved its record to 8-5-5 overall and 4-2-2 in the league.
The Terriers will close out their regular-season on Sunday at Drexel and need a win or a tie to qualify for the tournament. B.U. could still finish as high as second in the standings, as they trail second-place Towson, which has 16 points. Hartford, with a 6-0-2 record and 20 points, has already wrapped up first place.
Bone scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at 50:59 when he took a pass from senior Sigurd Dalen (Oslo, Norway).
Then, at 82:10, Bone figured in the Terriers' second score when he assisted on junior Kirk Miller's (Minnetonka, MN) goal.
In the meantime, Smith was called on to make three saves, all coming in the first half.
During the opening 45 minutes of play, the Flying Dutchmen took four shots. They would not have a shot in the second half.
Part of the problem was they began playing a man down at the 56:54 mark when David Pettitt received his second yellow card of the game and was sent to the sidelines. Just under 12 minutes later, Stuart Duffin received a red card, and seven minutes after that, Luckisee Williams was issued a red card. Finally, David Taylor received his fifth yellow card of the year and was removed from the game, leaving the Flying Dutchmen four men short.
Four Terriers received yellow cards, but none was forced to leave the game.
