Vote for Knox as 2011 America East Fans' Choice Player of the Year
BOSTON - With the top seed for the upcoming America East tournament on the line, the Boston University men's soccer team will conclude the regular season at Binghamton on Saturday night with action slated to begin at 7 p.m. The Terriers (9-7-0, 5-1-0 AE) need a win or draw against the Bearcats (4-10-2, 0-5-1 AE) to capture the program's second consecutive regular season title and 11th overall.
BU gained control of its destiny on Wednesday night, when the offense exploded for a season-high three goals in a 3-0 victory over New Hampshire. That same evening, Stony Brook (4-1-1 AE) stunned UMBC, 3-0, to move into second place and push the Retrievers (4-2-0 AE) into third.
The Terriers must remain wary though because a loss Saturday combined with wins by SBU and UMBC over the weekend would leave BU in third place entering the conference tournament and without a first-round bye.
Looking to prevent that from happening will be seniors Ben Berube and Stephen Knox. They will be aiming for their third conference regular season title in four seasons. Dealing with nagging injuries all year long, Berube has tallied five of his six points in the last two games, recording a goal and assist at Albany followed by a goal against UNH. Knox has five goals on the season with three game winners, including one against then-No. 22 Providence.
The freshmen class has also proven to be key contributors this season. Dominique Badji has five goals and three assists for a team-high 13 points. Named America East Rookie of the Week last Monday, he has scored the game winner in three of the last four games. On the defensive end, goalkeeper Nick Thomson has been stellar with six shutouts and a 0.73 goals against average.
They will face a Binghamton squad that has scored in each of the last three games. Jake Keegan has provided the offensive spark during the season with a team-high five goals and four assists. Both Luke Halberg and Ryan Walter have three goals as well. At net, Chris Hayen has appeared in 13 contests and holds a 1.72 GAA along with a 0.671 save percentage.
BU owns a 6-3-4 advantage in the all-time series against the Bearcats but is 0-3-3 at Binghamton.
Depending on the outcome of this weekend's games, the Terriers will next either host an an America East first round game on Saturday, Nov. 5, or a semifinal game on Wednesday, Nov. 9.
