Senior Michael Bustamante of the Boston University men's soccer team has been named to the 2011 Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Trophy Watch List, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced this week. The MAC Hermann Trophy is the highest individual award in intercollegiate soccer.
A CollegeSoccerNews.com Preseason All-American, Bustamante became last year just the 11th Terrier in the program's history to receive a third All-Northeast Region award. The 2008 America East Midfielder and Rookie of the Year was an anchor once again in the midfield last season. He helped the offense by converting on two penalty kicks and assisting on four scores, while also helping BU's defense shut out eight opponents. With 23 career assists, he is just one shy of cracking the top 10 in program history.
"This is a well deserved honor for Michael," 27th-year head coach Neil Roberts said. "He is certainly one of the top players in the country, and I'm very happy for him.
"It's disappointing though that he won't be able to play this year after suffering an injury back in the spring," Roberts added. "Fortunately, he's a couple of weeks away from getting back on the field and training with the team. We look forward to seeing him lead the Terriers next season."
Selected by the America East coaches to win the conference, BU will open the season on Friday, Aug. 26 at in-state rival Holy Cross.
