HOUSTON - Recent BU graduate Samuel Appiah earned his first career start in the midfield for the Houston Dynamo in the third round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup on Tuesday night against Miami FC and 2006 America East Defender of the Year Zach Kirby. Both men played the entire contest, as the Dynamo pulled out a 1-0 victory to advance to the quarterfinals.

The men played one season together at BU in 2006, helping the Terriers finish with a 10-4-5 record. Midfielder Jarryd Goldberg ('07) also plays for Miami but did not see any action in the game.

Appiah was drafted in the third round of the 2010 Major League Soccer Draft by the Dynamo, marking the first time a Terrier was selected in the professional soccer league since Kirby was taken by the LA Galaxy in the sixth round in 2007. Kirby was released before the start of the 2007 season though to make room for the signing of David Beckham.

Kirby is currently in his second season with Miami FC, which competes in the USSF Division 2 Professional League.
