STONY BROOK, N.Y. - For the second consecutive year, sophomore Dominique Badji netted the golden goal against Stony Brook to give the Boston University men's soccer team a 2-1 victory on Friday night at LaValle Stadium in front of 1,372 fans.

Nearly 70 minutes after SBU scored, freshman Carlos Ruiz recorded his first goal of the season at 77:37 to help send the game to overtime. In the 96th minute, senior Michael Bustamante found Badji for the game winner to move into the team lead in points with nine off three assists and three goals.

With the thrilling come-from-behind victory, the defending America East regular season champion Terriers improve to 4-5-3 and 1-0-1 in league play, while the defending tournament champion Seawolves (7-3-1, 1-1-0 AE) see their six-game unbeaten streak snapped. BU also earned its sixth straight victory in the rivalry dating back to 2001.

SBU scored first at 7:53 when Berian Gobeil chested into the goal a deflected pass off sophomore goalkeeper Nick Thomson from Leonardo Fernandes. The Seawolves entered the locker room at the half with a 1-0 lead and slight 5-4 edge in shot attempts.

Having already scored second-half goals on the road at then-No. 1 North Carolina, No. 3 UConn and No. 10 Boston College in front of boisterous crowds, the well-tested Terriers never gave in and kept the pressure on SBU throughout the final 45 minutes of regulation.

Ruiz finally put BU on the board by first helping create a SBU turnover. He picked up the loose ball and shot a grounder toward the far post for the 1-1 tie at 77:37.

The Terriers had two more quality looks before the end of regulation in the 84th and 86th minutes, respectively. Redshirt-freshman Mac McGuire's first attempt was blocked and his second was saved by Stefan Manz (5-1-1), who suffered his first loss of the season after beginning the season with three shutouts.

A two-time America East Midfielder of the Year, Fernandes entered the game with a team-high seven goals. He was held to just four shot attempts with his last one being blocked at 93:30. SBU had two ensuing corner kicks, but BU's backline held strong, leading to Badji's heroics.

Bustamante sent a cross toward the goal and Badji finished it for the victory. Tallying his third assist of the season, Bustamante moves into sole possession of ninth place in the BU record book with 26 career assists.

The Terriers finished with a 13-12 lead in shot attempts, while the Seawolves had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. Both Thomson and Manz ended the game with two saves each.

After earning their first two-game win streak of the season, the Terriers will return to Nickerson Field on Wednesday (Oct. 10) to host Vermont at 7 p.m.
