BOSTON - No. 24 Brown spoiled Boston University's home opener by heading in a golden goal during the first minute of overtime to defeat the Terriers, 1-0, on Thursday night at Nickerson Field.

After facing its seventh straight opponent to be coming off an appearance in the second round of the 2011 NCAA tournament, BU drops to 1-4-2, while the Bears improve to 4-1-0.

Entering the game ranked fifth nationally in goals against average (0.25) and 13th in save percentage (0.889), Brown's goalkeeper Sam Kernan-Schloss posted two saves for his fourth shutout of the season.

He earned the win when three Bears connected on a goal at 90:40. After a foul was called on the Terriers near midfield, Dylan Remick placed a free kick into the front of the box.  Bobby Belair headed it forward over BU defenders and Tim Whalen headed it past sophomore goalkeeper Nick Thomson to end the game.

The contest was battled mostly in the midfield with the teams combining for just 14 shots, six corner kicks and only 15 fouls. Six Terriers attempted a shot with senior Michael Bustamante rifling one on net in the 12th minute and junior Anthony Ciccone adding another at 44:42 in the first half.

Sophomore Cameron Souri had the last quality look for the Terriers at 85:37, but a Brown defender was in position for the block.

Already missing two regular starters in 2011 America East Defender of the Year Kelvin Madzongwe and freshman forward Carlos Ruiz due to injury, the Terriers lost another when freshman back Jeroen Blugh had to come out in the 11th minute.

Despite the losses, the defense held strong in regulation, limiting Brown to just seven shot attempts. Thomson made all three of his saves in the second half but was not challenged the way he had been by the other five ranked opponents.

After competing in their third straight overtime contest with 1-1 draws to No. 3 UConn and Providence, the Terriers will remain at home and next host in-state rival Holy Cross on Tuesday (Sept. 18) with action set to begin at 7 p.m.

Fans are encouraged to arrive early for Military Appreciation Night as the first 200 will receive a replica soccer jersey.
