BOSTON - The Boston University men's lacrosse team defeated England, 11-8, in the program's first-ever home scrimmage on Wednesday night at Nickerson Field.
After a low-scoring first half, the Terriers scored eight goals in the final two quarters to earn the victory. Freshmen Patrick Donnelly and Ryan Johnston each recorded a hat trick while classmates Adam Schaal (2), Pat Myers (2) and Cal Dearth (1) also found the back of the net.
Freshman Christian Carson-Banister was fantastic in the cage for the Terriers, as he made 12 saves in his three quarters of work. Classmate Tyler Zickel played the fourth quarter and made two saves.
England scored the game's opening goal before Schaal evened the score with about 14 minutes left in the first quarter. Both teams scored late goals to close out the opening 20 minutes, with Johnston evening the score, 2-2, after freshman Justin Diamond found him cutting towards the cage.
It was a defensive affair in the second 20 minutes, with Johnston getting the quarter's only goal thanks to an assist by freshman Chad Bell. The Terriers took a 3-2 lead into halftime and came out of the break with a quick goal. BU won the opening faceoff and Schaal found Myers just 14 seconds into the third quarter.
Goals from Sam Dexter and Glenn Humphreys evened the score for England at 4-4 before the Terriers rattled off three straight markers. Donnelly scored two straight goals to end the third quarter before Dearth opened the final 20 minutes with his lone strike of the game.
England scored three straight goals of its own to cut the BU lead back to just one at 8-7. Following a timeout from head coach Ryan Polley, the Terriers went on another 3-0 run to take the lead for good. The run began with Schaal's second goal of the game before Myers and Johnston extended the lead to 11-7. England responded with one more goal to close its account.
The Terriers were great in the faceoff X, winning 18 of the 22 draws. Sophomore Elliott Burr won 12 of his 13 chances while freshman Sam Talkow was 5-of-8 and classmate Jake Dansey won his only opportunity.
Wednesday's win concluded the Terriers' fall schedule. They will begin their first season of varsity play in Spring 2014.
