Freshman defenseman Matt Grzelcyk of the Boston University men's ice hockey team has been named to the preliminary roster for the 2013 U.S. National Junior Team, as announced by USA Hockey on Tuesday. Grzelcyk was also named the Pro Ambitions Hockey East Rookie of the Month for November.
The 27 players on the U.S. roster will attend a training camp starting Sunday, Dec. 16, at the New York Rangers' Madison Square Garden Training Center in Tarrytown, N.Y. Following an additional camp in Helsinki, Finland, the final 23-man roster is set to be announced on Dec. 23. The 2013 U.S. National Junior Team will compete at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Ufa, Russia.
Grzelcyk is one of 15 current collegians on the 27-man roster and joins Boston College's Johnny Gaudreau and Providence's Jon Gillies as the Hockey East representatives on the squad. The Terriers have had at least one player make the final U.S. junior roster in each of the last five World Junior Championships.
Through 13 games, Grzelcyk ranks third on the Terriers in points with 11 on two goals and nine assists. He is 11th in the country amongst freshmen in points per game at 0.85 and is second in points in amongst both Hockey East rookies and defensemen.
Grzelcyk scored at least one point in seven of the eight contests in November and totaled eight points (2g, 6a) and a plus-4 rating. Both of his goals came against Boston College with the latter being the game-winner on Nov. 30. He added six blocked shots in the month and committed just one penalty over the eight contests.
He is the second Terrier to earn the monthly honor, as goaltender Matt O'Connor was named Co-Rookie of the Month for October. BU's other freshman netminder, Sean Maguire, was a runner-up for the Hockey East Goaltender of the Month award for November.
