WAKEFIELD, Mass. - After helping the Boston University men's ice hockey team open its 2008-09 season by claiming the Ice Breaker Invitational title, sophomore Kevin Shattenkirk has been named the CCM/RBK Hockey East Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. Shattenkirk scored a goal in each of the Terriers' wins over No. 5 North Dakota and No. 11 Michigan State.

Shattenkirk was instrumental in leading the Terriers to their second Ice Breaker title, scoring two goals -including the game-winner against Michigan State - and bolstering a defense that held both the Spartans and the Fighting Sioux to one goal each. He was named to the All-Ice Breaker Team and posted a plus-4 rating for the tournament.

In Friday's 5-1 win over North Dakota, Shattenkirk scored the Terriers' first goal of the year, sending home a shot from the slot off a feed from classmate Nick Bonino with 1:31 left in the opening period. His goal on Saturday proved to be the game-winner, as he gave the Terriers a 2-0 lead at 14:57 of the middle period on a shot from the left point.

A 2008 Hockey East All-Rookie Team selection, Shattenkirk is coming off a freshman season in which he posted 21 points on four goals and 17 assists. His assist total was tied for third in the country among freshman defensemen.
