BOSTON ??? The Boston University men???s ice hockey team earned a No. 12 ranking on the preseason USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll, the same position in which the Terriers ended their 2004-05 campaign. It marks an improvement from last year???s preseason poll, when BU fell in the ???others receiving votes??? category. The Terriers also placed 13th on the USCHO.com/CSTV preseason poll.

With a 23-14-4 record last season, the Terriers finished a point off from the lead in Hockey East and earned a bid to the NCAA tournament, where eventual national runner-up North Dakota beat the Terriers in the Northeast regional. BU also brought the coveted Beanpot championship back to Commonwealth Avenue for the 26th time in school history.

Minnesota was picked first on the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll, with reigning back-to-back national champion Denver chosen second. The two were switched in the USCHO.com/CSTV poll, with DU getting the No. 1 nod and Minnesota jumping in at No. 2.

Boston College, New Hampshire and Maine also made the top 15 from Hockey East. BC garnered the best ranking at No. 5, while UNH and Maine were Nos. 9 and 11, respectively. UMass Lowell finished just off the top-15 poll, but earned a No. 16 spot on USCHO.com???s new 20-team system.

The Terriers return 21 letter winners from last year, including All-America candidate junior John Curry (Shorewood, Minn.) in net. On defense, seven players are back from 2004-05, while up front, BU returns its top three scorers in seniors David Van der Gulik (Abbotsford, B.C.) and John Laliberte (Saco, Maine), along with sophomore Peter MacArthur (Clifton Park, N.Y.).

BU faces off against the University of Toronto in an exhibition game at Agganis Arena at 7:00 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 7) before opening both the regular season and Hockey East play versus UMass Lowell on Saturday, Oct. 15.
