Junior defensemen Colby Cohen and Kevin Shattenkirk of the Boston University men's ice hockey team have signed entry-level contracts with the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League and will immediately report to the team's American Hockey League affiliate, the Lake Erie Monsters. Cohen and Shattenkirk were both selected by the Avalanche in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

The Terriers have now had three members of this year's junior class forgo their final year of eligibility, as forward Nick Bonino signed with the Anaheim Ducks on March 21.

Shattenkirk, who earned second-team All-America honors last year as a sophomore, served as team captain this past season and posted 29 points on seven goals and 22 assists. Picked 14th overall by Colorado in 2007, Shattenkirk finishes his BU career with 78 points (18g, 60a) in 121 games. During last year's national championship season, Shattenkirk was named to the All-New England Team and was a Hockey East Second Team All-Star.

A second-round (45th overall) pick in 2007 by the Avalanche, Cohen is coming off his best season with the Terriers, as he led the team's defensemen in scoring with 30 points on 14 goals and 16 assists. He was named a Hockey East First Team All-Star and also earned All-New England honors and his 14 goals were the most in a single season by BU defenseman in over 30 years. Cohen tallied 78 points (25g, 53a) in 118 career contests at BU.

Shattenkirk and Cohen will be reunited with senior Zach Cohen, who has already played in seven games with Lake Erie after signing with the Avs on March 23. The head coach of the Monsters is former BU associate head coach David Quinn.
