No. 3 Men's Ice Hockey to Close Regular Season with Northeastern
BOSTON - The No. 3 Boston University men's ice hockey team (19-9-4, 15-7-3 HE) closes out the regular season with a home-and-home series versus cross-town rival Northeastern University (3-22-7, 3-15-7 HE), beginning on Friday night at Matthews Arena. The series and regular season will finish up on Saturday evening as BU returns home to Agganis Arena for the first time in five games for Senior Night. BU won the first meeting between the teams this season, with a 4-0 shutout at Northeastern on Jan. 7 that sparked an 11-game Terrier win streak. BU is unbeaten in three games after skating to back-to-back ties at Vermont last weekend, while the Huskies are coming off a tie and a loss to Massachusetts. The Terriers are in the hunt for first place in the league, while also fighting to keep home ice, whereas the Huskies have been knocked out of the playoffs and will either finish ninth or 10th in the league. Saturday night will mark the last regular-season home game for the six seniors on the 2005-06 BU roster, including John Laliberte, Jekabs Redlihs, Stephan Siwiec, Dan Spang and co-captains David Van der Gulik and Brad Zancanaro. A presentation will take place immediately following the home game. The Terriers sit second behind Boston College in the Hockey East standings with 33 points compared to the Eagles’ 35. Maine is tied for second with BU, but would lose the tie-breaker. New Hampshire is fourth with 31 points, while Providence is fifth with 29. If BU, BC and Maine were to all tie for first after the last two games, the Terriers would win the tie-breaker to be the top-tournament seed, while all three would have a share of the league’s regular-season championship. If UNH was also part of the first-place tie, BU would fall to the number two seed. Currently, the Terriers could finish anywhere from first to fifth and need only one point to solidify home ice for the Hockey East quarterfinals. The Terriers and Huskies have played 188 times since the 1930-31 season and the Terriers hold the 135-49-4 (.729) advantage. The two teams have faced off at least once per season since 1946-47. In Hockey East action, the Terriers hold the 43-20-4 (.672) edge. Battling to overtime on 18 occasions, BU holds the 10-4-4 (.667) advantage with the extra session. In the last 13 meetings, the Terriers are 9-2-2, while four of the past nine games have gone into overtime, where BU is 2-0-2.
