ORONO, Maine - The No. 13 Boston University men's ice hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie with Maine on Friday evening at Alfond Arena. The Terriers allowed three power-play goals but got a game-tying goal from freshman Ahti Oksanen with 11:58 left in regulation.

BU (13-12-2, 10-7-2 Hockey East) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals just 10 seconds apart midway through the opening period by junior Matt Nieto and senior Wade Megan. The Black Bears, however, reeled off three straight power-play goals to take a 3-2 lead early in the second.

The Terriers had just two power-play chances on the night but used the latter to knot the game in the third. A shot by Oksanen through traffic from the center point beat Maine goaltender Martin Ouellette on assists from Nieto and sophomore Evan Rodrigues.

Maine (8-15-6, 4-10-6) appeared to regain the lead with 5:19 left in regulation on yet another power-play marker. However, the call was reversed though following a video replay that ruled a Maine player was in the crease.

The game headed to overtime, where each team recorded three shots on goal but neither could come up with a winner.

The Black Bears held a 36-26 shot advantage for the game and converted on three of their eight chances with the man advantage.

Freshman Matt O'Connor turned in a 33-save performance for the Terriers, who snapped a three-game losing streak but extended their winless streak to five games (0-3-2). Ouellette turned aside 23 shots for Maine.

Both of BU's early goals came directly off Maine turnovers in its defensive zone. Rodrigues stole a puck along the right boards before skating in and feeding Nieto in the slot for the first tally at 8:48 of the first.

The Black Bears won the ensuing faceoff but sophomore Cason Hohmann snuck in and knocked the puck away before finding Megan, who spun around in the slot and wasted little time before firing a shot that beat Ouellette inside the left post.

Maine freshman Steven Swavely scored back-to-back power-play goals on rebounds at the crease to tie the game. His first came with 1:34 left in the opening period while the equalizer happened just 1:12 into the middle stanza.

Senior Joey Diamond gave the Black Bears their lone lead of the contest when he scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season on a power play just over four minutes after Swavely's second tally.

The teams will meet again on Saturday to wrap up their season series as BU posted a 1-0 home win over Maine back on Dec. 8. The game, which starts at 7 p.m., will be broadcast by NESN.
