Our competitive goal is to be consistently considered among the very elite of collegiate rowing. As such, we recruit and encourage student-athletes who possess the physical attributes and strength of character necessary to win at the highest level.
A critical part of any successful men's rowing program is the freshman squad. The team is a mix of experienced freshmen and walk-ons recruited from campus. A high priority is placed on the development and success of the freshman squad. This includes teaching proper rowing technique, strength training, aerobic development, diet, good study habits and social responsibility and of course, how to win. We foster an environment that expects athletes to excel in the classroom, on campus and on the water. BU does not field a lightweight squad; however, elite level lightweight student-athletes have been significant contributors to our program over the years.
The prospect identification process begins with the completion of the men's crew on-line prospect questionnaire - https://secureq.scoutwareforms.net/q/bu_mcrew/t42x1.html and/or contacting us at bucrew@bu.edu.
Scholarships and Financial Aid at Boston University:
Athletic based Financial Aid (scholarship) is available for qualified, selected student athletes. These resources are awarded to student-athletes who we feel can help lead our program to competitive success at the highest level. A walk-on who excels over the course of the first year may be considered for a scholarship for subsequent years.
Need-Based Financial aid is an important consideration for most students and their families. Financial aid is determined by a combination of both demonstrated need and academic merit. Thus, if two students demonstrate similar financial need, but one student is stronger academically, the stronger student will likely secure a larger award. Please note that the athletic department is not, and cannot be involved in need-based Financial Aid determinations. However, for academically admissible prospects, we can facilitate an informal, but informative Financial Aid Pre-read process.
Official Visits:
BU is unique in that the University requires that you be deemed admissible by the Admissions Office prior to being invited on an Official Visit. If invited, we strongly encourage you to make an official visit to the university. An official visit provides you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the daily life of a BU student-athlete by attending classes, taking meals with the team and observing practice sessions. You may take up to five official visits to five different institutions beginning on the first day of classes of your senior year in high school. An Official Visit is limited to 48 hours in duration. If you are invited on an Official visit with us, we require that it will encompass at least one academic day so that you have the opportunity to visit classes and experience academic life. Because our Admissions Office determines your recruiting eligibility, please be prepared to submit all necessary documentation in a timely manner if and when requested by the coaching staff. If you are invited for an Official Visit, we will typically sponsor your meals and lodging while on campus as well as assist with transportation between Boston local transit hubs and campus. Sponsorship of travel beyond Boston will be determined on a case by case basis.
Unofficial Visits:
You may visit Boston University at your own expense at any time during high school or afterwards. This is referred to as an unofficial visit. If you wish to meet with a member of the coaching staff during an unofficial visit, please communicate at least one week in advance via e-mail, bucrew@bu.edu, to determine availability. There are no limitations on the number of unofficial visits you may take or the number of times you may visit one school. We recommend that you schedule a campus tour during your visit. For more information about campus tours, visit http://www.bu.edu/admissions/visit-us/schedule-your-visit/.
