Despite strong northeast winds that caused some problems for rowers over the weekend, the 40th annual Head of the Charles Regatta went off without a hitch. More than 270,000 spectators were on hand along the Charles River to watch the two-day event in which 6,729 participants competed in 24 different events. There were some changes this year to the race to accommodate for the strong winds. Rather than starting the Regatta from the usual start point of BU's DeWolfe Boathouse, race organizers launched rowers from the Riverside Boathouse, which shortened the length of the race from 3 miles to 2 ½ miles.
