BOSTON - Thomas Bohrer, one of the most accomplished American rowers in Olympic history, has been named the head coach of the Boston University men's crew program, Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics Mike Lynch announced today.
A two-time Olympic medalist and a three-time medalist at the World Championships, Bohrer competed for the United States Rowing Team from 1986 to 1994, earning silver medals in the men's coxless fours at two consecutive Olympic Summer Games (Seoul in 1988 and Barcelona in 1992). He was named US Rowing Athlete of the Year in 1989, and served as the Olympic Team Captain in 1992.
"I want to commend our crew alumni, current student-athletes and Senior Associate Athletic Director Nancy Lyons for their commitment throughout this process to hiring the most qualified person to lead our program," said Lynch. "BU aspires to be a national competitor in the world of intercollegiate rowing. After conducting a nationwide search, we are confident that we are heading in that direction with the addition of Tom as our head coach. His extensive knowledge and experience in the sport is a powerful combination that will immediately benefit our team."
"Tom is a winner," said Ted Nash, a 1954 BU graduate who has competed or coached in nine Olympic Games and was the University of Pennsylvania's men's crew head coach. "He knows Boston, its people, the [Charles] River, the [DeWolfe] boathouse, recruiting, fundraising and, most importantly, how to train and how to coach. He will make his student-athletes better people, better athletes and better graduates for BU."
Bohrer (pronounced BOAR-ur) has more than 20 years of successful coaching experience, most recently with the Union Boat Club in Boston, where he has trained rowers at the masters, collegiate, novice, youth and national team levels since 2000. He also has served as the boys' varsity coach at Wayland-Weston High School, which won state championships each of the three years he coached there.

Bohrer founded TBfit.com, a subscription website providing rowing and strength-training programs, and has served as a consultant for Concept 2, a manufacturer of rowing machines and oars. He had two previous stints as a coach with Community Rowing and was Middlesex School's director of rowing and strength and conditioning coach from 1997-99. He has served as the head indoor rowing instructor for the Concord Recreation Department since founding the program in 1998.
Certified as both a personal trainer (CPT) and strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS), Bohrer continues to compete at the master's level. He won the Masters one-man at the Head of the Charles in 2001 and 2002, and finished second in 2003. In 2004 and 2005 he won the Masters eight-man with his former club, Penn AC.
Bohrer graduated from the Florida Institute of Technology with a bachelor of science degree in 1986. He lives in Concord, Mass., with his wife, CB Sands, a two-time lightweight world champion. They have three children: Sally, Sabrina and Si.
The Terrier men's crew program is entering its 70th season, and once again will have its DeWolfe Boathouse serve as the host for the start of the 45th annual Head of the Charles Regatta, to be held Oct. 18-19, 2008.
