Former Boston University men's rowers Florian Mennigen ('06) and Jozef Klaassen ('07) will race for gold in the men's eight at the Olympics after clinching a spot in the A Final over the last three days. They will compete against each other on Wednesday (Aug. 1) at 5:30 a.m. ET.

Winner of the last three World Championship titles with Germany, Mennigen earned his slot in the seven seat by winning the second heat this past Saturday by 2.09 seconds over Great Britain at Eton Dorney in Buckinghamshire. Making his second appearance at the Olympic Games, he will be racing in the A Final for the first time after Germany finished a disappointing eighth in 2008.

In the same heat on Saturday, Klaassen and the Netherlands took third and had to compete Monday in the repechage. Needing a top-four finish out of six crews, the eight boat comfortably placed third to reach the medal round. Klaassen will be making his second appearance in the A Final after missing out on a medal by three seconds in 2008.

Both Klaassen and Mennigen will try to become the first rower from BU to earn a medal in rowing since Thomas Mollenkamp ('86) claimed gold in 1988 for West Germany in the men's eight.

Following the two men from Boston is BU men's crew head coach Thomas Bohrer, who won the silver in the coxless fours for the United States in both 1988 and 1992.

"It's exciting that these men spent four years at Boston University and managed to stay with rowing at the highest level," Bohrer said. "The big thing with the sport is rowers usually don't hit their prime until they're in the late 20's and early 30's, so they are now in position to achieve great things.

"Their accomplishments add more accolades for our program," he added. "I'm very proud that they represented BU, and I'm sure in the back of their minds, they're thinking of that relationship even though they are racing for their country."

The race will feature Germany, the Netherlands, host Great Britain, the United States, Canada and Australia.

Four other former Terriers are also competing at the Olympics.

Meindert Klem (’10) will race Wednesday in the men’s pair for the Netherlands. Women’s basketball standout Rachael Vanderwal (’06) will compete later today for Great Britain against Canada. Incoming junior Ella Gunson from Massey University (New Zealand) won her first field hockey game on Sunday against Australia, while Brett Brown (’83) lost his first game as the head coach of Australia’s national men’s basketball team in a hard-fought 75-71 decision to Brazil.
