PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 11 Boston University men’s crew team fell just short at No. 4 Brown in the Michalson Cup, finishing less than six seconds behind the Bears on the Seekonk River on Saturday morning. It was the last tune-up for the Terriers before the upcoming Eastern Sprints in Worcester, Mass., on May 21.

Although all four BU boats came up second to Brown amidst warm temperatures and flat water, no margins were greater than 10 seconds and BU Head Coach Rodney Pratt was happy with the Terriers’ effort on the day.

“I thought we did really well,” said Pratt. “We had a lot of spirit and we’re really coming up to a little crest here – rowing faster each week. We definitely improved from last week’s race in Wisconsin.”

In the varsity eight race, the Bears grabbed a four-seat lead by the 500-meter mark, but the Terriers kept at it and continued pushing back. Behind by a length at the split, the teams traded pushes in the final 1,000 meters, with Brown taking a couple seconds in the last quarter to finish in 5:43.16, compared to BU’s time of 5:49.13.

The junior varsity eight race saw the largest Brown victory, as the Bears dominated throughout to finish in 6:00.66, with the Terriers clocking in at 6:10.55. Meanwhile, the third varsity fours, Brown used a 36 beat-per-minute stroke, compared to a 32 by BU, to take the win in 7:03.38, ahead of the Terriers’ time of 7:08.21.

Finally, in the first freshman eight race, Brown took the lead off the start, but the Terriers kept in it while understroking the Bears by three to four beats throughout. Despite the strong effort, BU finished in 6:08.93, behind Brown’s time of 6:03.92.

BU now has a two-week break before traveling to Worcester, Mass., for the Eastern Sprints on May 21.
