MADISON, Wis. – After taking the Jablonic Cup from No. 7 Wisconsin for the first time in nine years last season, the No. 11 Boston University men’s crew team saw the Badgers reclaim the cup on Sunday morning at Wisconsin’s Lake Mendota. While the Terriers were edged by the Badgers in the race, BU came away with a win over fellow Charles River habitant MIT.

After the race was delayed and a new course was set due to poor conditions, the teams settled with a crossing tailwind, but overall decent waters. In the varsity eight race, Wisconsin got off to a fast start and took the lead, while BU had steering issues in the first 1000 meters. Pushing back at the 1,500-meter mark, the Terriers were only three and a half seconds off the lead before the Badgers got in front of the BU boat and rowed home for the win in 6:00.4, ahead of BU’s time of 6:06.7 and MIT’s time of 6:27.9.

“I thought our guys rowed well,” said BU Head Coach Rodney Pratt. “They made some good moves, but Wisconsin really nailed the start.”

In the junior varsity eight race, Wisconsin put up a strong performance and again came up the winner in 6:06.8, ahead of both BU (6:20.7) and MIT (6:50.8).

Finally, in the freshman eights, after a tight race with Wisconsin, BU was out sprinted in the last 500 meters to finish in 6:16.4, behind the Badgers’ 6:11.5 mark.

The Terriers have one dual race remaining before the Eastern Sprints, which will take place at Brown on Saturday, May 6.
