Men's Crew Remains Winless; Loses To Dartmouth, Rutgers In Bill Cup
The Terriers' heavyweight men's crew, which had been 0-3 in regattas on The Charles River this year, took to the road for the only time this season on Saturday. Unfortunately, the results remained the same as the team lost at Rutgers in a triangular race with Dartmouth. Rutgers was timed in 5:54.9 over the 2000-meter course to win the annual Bill Cup. Dartmouth was second in 5:55.0, and the Terriers were third in 6:02. "I felt we rowed a good race," commented head coach Rodney Pratt, whose team is now 0-4 with upcoming races on The Charles against Columbia (next Saturday), Yale (May 1st) and Wisconsin (May 2nd). The team will then close out the 1999 season at the Eastern Sprints in Worcester on May 8-9 and the IRAs in Camden, NJ on May 27-29. "We had a problem off the start," said Pratt. "The stake boat we were on kept drifting, and we weren't really lined well with the other boats. I would have liked to have seen how we would have done if the stake boats were all lined up." In the second varsity race, the Terriers fared better, as they finished second behind Rutgers, while Dartmouth was third. The Scarlet Knights turned in an excellent 6:04, six seconds faster than B.U., and 14 seconds faster than the Big Green. B.U.'s two novice boats did exceptionally well. In the first novice event, B.U. battled Dartmouth for the entire course and lost on a flag decision. No official times were kept, but the margin was less than a second. Then, in the second novice race, the Terriers easily outrowed Rutgers, 6:27.7 to 6:41.9. Dartmouth did not have a boat entered in the race. B.U. also won the third varsity four, but, as was the case with the first novice, no time was kept. The results from Saturday:
