Men's Crew Sweeps Dartmouth, Rutgers; Earns First Bill Cup Victory Since '91
HANOVER, N.H. – En route to its first Bill Cup victory since 1991, the Boston University men’s crew team swept both Dartmouth and Rutgers on the Connecticut River on Saturday morning. Not only was it the first BU win in the last 15 years of the cup, but it was also the first time that a team swept the event, as the Terriers won all four races. In the varsity eight race, which was the last of the morning and had the strongest head wind and roughest water, the Terriers good off to a good start, rowing neck and neck with Rutgers. At the split, BU broke away and opened up a nine-second lead by the end of the 2,000-meter course. The Terriers clocked in at 5:59.4, compared to Rutgers’ time of 6:08.6 and host Dartmouth’s time of 6:19.3. Starting off the day were the second freshmen boats. With no Rutgers contingency, BU came out victorious in 6:27.5, ahead of Dartmouth’s time of 6:33.3. Next up was the first freshmen race, in which BU posted the fastest time of the day, coming in at 5:52.0 with only a weak head wind. Rutgers was second (5:56.7) and Dartmouth was third (6:04.0). It was a really close race between BU and Rutgers until the Terriers broke away in the last quarter of the course to gain a four-second lead in 500 meters. Finally, in the second varsity eights, the Terriers rowed to another impressive time of 5:55.0, ahead of Rutgers (6:01.7) and Dartmouth (6:10.5). Contrary to the other races, BU took this one from the start, holding a length lead after about 30 strokes and gradually moving out to a six-second lead. After the dominating Terrier effort on the Connecticut River, the team will host Columbia and Syracuse on the Charles River on Saturday, April 22.
