CAMDEN, N.J. - Backed by top-10 finishes in the varsity eight and freshman eight races, the No. 10 Boston University men's crew finished seventh overall at the IRA National Championship Regatta Saturday morning on the Cooper River.

Recording 122 points, 23 more than last year's performance (tied-for-eighth), the Terriers took sixth in the varsity eight, eighth in the freshman eight and 11th in both the second varsity eight and varsity four races.

Making its first appearance in the Grand Final since 2009, the ninth-seeded varsity eight boat coxed by senior Bobby McGee and stroked by junior Matthew Given finished two seconds behind Syracuse with a time of 5:34.888. The Terriers reached the national championship race on Friday by defeating No. 4 California, No. 5 Wisconsin and No. 7 Navy in the semifinals.

The freshman eight boat coxed by Lauren Harvey and stroked by Tim Giroux had the top performance of the day for BU in a thrilling Petite Final. Trying to win the event for the second time in three years, the Terriers took second at 5:45.684, finishing 0.4 seconds behind Princeton and 0.1 seconds ahead of Navy.

BU's second varsity eight boat coxed by senior Allison Pescatore and stroked by sophomore Danny Neilson posted a time of 5:47.147 for fifth place in the Petite Final, finishing eight seconds ahead of Penn.

In the first race of the morning, the varsity four boat coxed by sophomore Justin Rau and stroked by sophomore John Szramiak took fifth in the Petite Final with a time of 6:31.081, five seconds quicker than Yale.

Despite the completion of the IRAs, the 2011-12 athletic season is not over, as track and field members Allison Barwise (high jump) and Rich Peters (1,500m) will compete at the NCAAs, to be held June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa.
