Watch the Varsity Eight race

BOSTON - For the first time since 1987, before most of the members of the ninth-ranked Boston University men's crew were even born, the Terriers varsity eight boat shocked second-ranked and reigning Eastern Sprint champion Brown to capture their second-ever Michalson Cup Wednesday morning on the Charles River. The V8 boat earned a 3.1 second win, more than two seconds faster than the previous victory over the Bears.

Coxed by sophomore Bianca Wieczorek and stroked by junior Meindert Klem, the V8 boat stayed close with Brown through the first portion of the race, slowly moving ahead before taking half a boat length lead at the midway point of the race. The Terriers held strong and won with a time of 5:45.2, while the Bears crossed the line at 5:48.3.

Brown finished ahead of BU in both the 2V8 and 1F races to conclude the morning session. The Bears entered the day with seven of the 17 first-place votes in the latest US Rowing Collegiate poll.

"Obviously, I'm happy with how the kids raced, especially the first varsity," said first-year head coach Thomas Bohrer. "We want all of our boats to do well, but first varsity is the flagship boat for all programs. We talked about this race and being competitive with some of the best crews in the country, and certainly Brown winning Sprints against all of the Eastern schools two weeks ago and then being able to beat them is a huge confidence builder for us. It puts us in a good place, feeling good about where we are right now. Overall, this is a big day for us and me personally."

"This win is going to mean a lot for everything," he added. "For the alums who've rowed in the program, they feel a lot of pride that our program is competitive and moving in the right direction. Hopefully, this will help us to continue building a culture here at BU. A lot more kids will look at BU as a place where they can get a great education, but at the same time, row in a competitive and fun environment."

The Terriers will look to carry over the momentum from the stunning victory to next week's IRAs, which will take place June 4-6 in Sacramento, Calif.
