WORCESTER, Mass. - Highlighted by victories in the varsity eight and freshman eight Petite Finals, the No. 13 Boston University men's crew finished seventh overall at the Eastern Sprints and punched its ticket to the IRA National Championship Regatta Sunday afternoon on Lake Quinsigamond.

Needing a top-nine finish in the varsity eight competition to advance to the IRAs, the Terriers missed out on the Grand Final by 0.27 seconds. No. 6 Wisconsin won the morning heat at 5:59.641, topping No. 5 Navy (6:00.251) and BU (6:00.519) in a thrilling down-to-the-wire race.

Coxed by senior Bobby McGee and stroked by junior Matthew Given, the V8 boat rebounded from the heartbreaking result with a 1.74-second win over No. 12 Yale in the Petite Final to finish seventh overall and clinch the IRA berth. All six crews knew what was at stake, as just four seconds separated the winner and sixth-place finisher, No. 15 Dartmouth. No. 9 Northeastern finished third, while No. 7 Cornell placed fourth. BU posted a winning time of 5:57.133, which was the third fastest of the afternoon.

Missing out on a Grand Final appearance by 2.42 seconds, the F8 boat coxed by Lauren Harvey and stroked by Tim Giroux kept its spirits high and responded with a confidence-building 0.38-second win over Wisconsin. The Badgers defeated the Terriers two weeks prior by 1.8 seconds.

Cornell prevented the 2V8 boat coxed by senior Allison Pescatore and stroked by sophomore Danny Neilson from reaching the Grand Final with a 3.75-second margin victory. Later in the afternoon, the Terriers took second in the Petite Final to finish eighth overall, as Syracuse won the race by four seconds.

In the morning session, the Terriers' 3V8 boat took fourth, losing out on a Grand Final appearance by 0.18 seconds to Princeton. The freshman four boat raced as well, falling to Northeastern's open four boat by 4.526 seconds.

BU will next compete at the IRA Regatta, which will take place on May 31-June 2 in Camden, N.J.
