BOSTON - The spotlight continues to grow on the Boston University men's basketball team as NBC Sports became the latest national media outlet to rank the Terriers as one of the top mid-major programs entering the 2013-14 season.
Returning all five starters from last year's squad that made its third postseason appearance in four years with a trip to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament, BU was tabbed No. 11 in NBCSports.com's preseason Mid-Major power rankings.
The lone Patriot League representative on the list, the Terriers were previously ranked No. 63 in a list of 68 teams predicted to reach the 2014 NCAA tournament by USA Today. The contributions of senior D.J. Irving were sighted as one of the key reasons BU will be in position to make a postseason run in March.
Irving ranks seventh all-time at BU in assists (392) and 26th all-time in career points with 1,036. Over the past two weeks, he's been tabbed a preseason Mid-Major All-American by both CollegeInsider.com and College Sports Madness. NBC Sports placed Irving in the honorable mention list.
The recruiting abilities of third-year head coach Joe Jones and his staff have also been heralded by the national media. ESPN's Jeff Goodman recently ranked the group as the second toughest to recruit against at the mid-major level.
The 2013-14 season will begin on Sunday, Nov. 10 at the TD Garden against Northeastern in the first game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tripleheader. Tip-off is set for 12:30 p.m.
BU will open the 13-game home schedule on Wednesday, Nov. 13, against UMass Lowell at 7 p.m. in Case Gym.
