BOSTON - Currently tied-for-second in the America East standings, the Boston University men's basketball team and Vermont will face off at Agganis Arena on Wednesday night with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
The contest will cap a BU/UVM doubleheader that will begin at 5 p.m. with the women competing. ESPN3 will broadcast both games. Fans are encouraged to arrive early as the first 500 will receive a free "BU Basketball" baseball hat.
The Terriers (11-12, 7-2 AE) and Catamounts (13-10, 7-2 AE) opened Agganis Arena on Feb. 12, 2005, with BU coming out the winner by a 61-55 margin. BU won the next meeting in 2006 but dropped the following three contests, including a hard-fought 76-75 decision in 2010.
Since that loss though, BU has won the last 15 home games against America East competition, including a 74-65 victory over the Catamounts in Case Gym last season. The winning streak is the longest for the program since the Terriers won 24 between 1996-98.
BU will look to get back on track after falling at Stony Brook last Friday, 66-57. The loss snapped the Terriers' seven-game win streak and put the Seawolves (8-1 AE) ahead of both BU and Vermont in the league standings. Senior Darryl Partin tallied a game-high 21 points in the game and currently ranks tied-for-15th nationally in scoring at 19.9 ppg.
Since conference play began, Partin is shooting a scorching 44.1 percent from behind the arc to help BU average 66.9 ppg. Sophomore
D.J. Irving has averaged 6.1 apg and 11.6 ppg and is on pace to become the first Terrier since 1990 to lead the America East in assists.
On the defensive end, sophomore Dom Morris leads the team in conference action at 6.8 rpg, while senior Patrick Hazel is averaging 2.3 blocks per contest. They've helped the Terriers out-rebound opponents, 33.7-31.2, for a positive 2.4 margin. BU has only allowed more than 70 points once in 2012 when the Catamounts pulled out an 83-69 victory at Patrick Gymnasium.
Like the Terriers, Vermont has won seven of its last eight games. In the earlier victory over BU, Four McGlynn tallied 20 points, while Brian Voelkel posted 16 rebounds. Matt Glass added 19 points and five rebounds, as UVM won the battle at the boards, 42-31. During the season, the Catamounts have had four men start every contest, while BU has only had one in Partin.
After the contest, BU will visit the state of New York for two games, starting with a trip to Binghamton on Saturday, Feb. 4. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
