Terriers Rally for 59-52 Victory Against Stony Brook
STONY BROOK, N.Y. - For the second consecutive game, the Boston University men's basketball team rallied from a double-digit deficit, and this time the Terriers (5-12, 2-3 America East) pulled out a 59-52 win over Stony Brook (4-13, 1-4 AE) Saturday afternoon at the Sports Complex. BU fell behind late in the first half when the Terriers went scoreless over the final seven minutes of the period. But Boston University fought back over the course of the second frame, spurred by timely threes from junior guard/forward Matt Wolff (Walpole, Mass.), to move back in front for good with 6:45 to go in the game. Red-shirt sophomore Tyler Morris (Indianapolis, Ind.) scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed a career-high-tying six rebounds. Sophomore forward Scott Brittain (Oakville, Ont.) added his first double-double of the season, and third in his career, with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Wolff was the third Terrier in double figures, tallying 13 points on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting from deep. Ricky Lucas and Mitchell Beauford led Stony Brook with 11 points apiece. Brittain scored the first four points of the second half to cut SBU's lead to 33-26, but the Terriers suffered another cold spell until junior guard Marques Johnson (Hazlet, N.J.) laid the ball in at 14:32 to make it 35-28 in favor of the Seawolves. Wolff knocked down back-to-back threes to trim Stony Brook's lead even further, 37-34 at 11:05. A Brittain dunk at 7:18 edged BU to within two, 40-38, and after a missed Seawolf free throw, freshman guard/forward John Holland (Bronx, N.Y.) came down the floor and sunk a three to give BU its first lead, 41-40, since 7:44 in the first period. Wolff made two more 3-pointers and Brittain dropped in a lay up to send BU out to its largest advantage of the game, 52-45, at 2:46. Stony Brook's Michael Tyree hit his first triple of the game with 1:08 left to inch SBU within two, 52-50; however, the Terriers went 5-for-6 from the line to salt away the win.
BU shot well from deep in both halves, going 11-for-26 from the 3-point line (42.3 pct.) for the game. The Terriers limited the Seawolves to 28.6 pct. from long range (4-for-14) and took care of the ball in the seond half, committing just three turnovers in the period. Brittain scored the first basket of the game, but Stony Brook took an 8-2 lead at 15:42 on a lay up by Demetrius Young. Morris took over from there, going on a personal 14-point run, including three 3-pointers, to give BU a 16-15 lead at 9:37. The teams traded leads in the following minutes, with the Terriers gaining a 22-18 advantage at 7:44 on a trey by Holland. However, BU did not score again for the rest of the half and went into the locker room down, 31-22. BU hosts a pair of games next week, starting with UMBC on Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. in Case Gymnasium. |
