I've noticed that the athletic department website shows many men's ice hockey games online. Are there plans to offer this for other Terrier sports?
Streaming and related video and audio content is becoming an increasingly larger component of our website, as you may have noticed with the permanent player and portal located on the right-hand side of the GoTerriers.com homepage.
We were one of the first schools to "stream" games online, starting a few years ago with our men's ice hockey program due to its national following. There are hundreds of fans who watch and support the Terrier hockey team online on GoTerriers.com each night that we play in Agganis Arena.
We have streamed select men's basketball and women's basketball games at Agganis Arena as well, and plan to increase the number of contests we air by those teams and others.
In fact, this spring we streamed online all six of the women's lacrosse regular-season home contests from Nickerson Field. This was a great opportunity for us to showcase another premiere sport for a worldwide audience, and we already have heard positive feedback from team alumni, fans, prospective student-athletes and current student-athletes' family members.
This area will remain a point of emphasis of ours so we can offer Terrier fans who cannot attend a contest in person the opportunity to watch it online. We also want to remain sensitive to the level of quality we offer so that our fans can enjoy the best-possible production. While other schools may have a higher quantity of games streamed, we are proud that our quality is as strong as that of any school in the country.
What is the Commissioner's Cup?
The Commissioner's Cup annually recognizes the most accomplished broad-based athletic department in the America East Conference. A scoring system rewards each school for success both during the regular season and championship competition in the conference's 21 sports.
We are proud that Boston University has won the Commissioner's Cup seven times overall and five of the last six years, and in the latest 2007-08 standings, we are on pace to win for the third consecutive year.
The Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner's Cup is named in honor of the first commissioner of America East. Haskell served as commissioner of the conference from 1987 until his retirement in 1997.
The scoring system for the Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner's Cup is as follows: In sports where regular-season round robin competition is conducted, the first-place institution in the final standings receives four points times the total number of teams involved in conference play. The second-place institution receives four less points; third place receives eight less points, and so on. Additionally, the America East (tournament) champion receives two points times the total number of teams participating in the championship. The second-place institution receives two less points; third place receives four less points and so on down to the last-place institution which receives two points.
In sports where regular-season round robin competition is not conducted (cross country, women's golf, tennis, track and field, swimming and diving), the first-place institution at the America East championship receives two points times the total number of teams participating in the championship. The second-place institution receives two less points; third place gets four less points and so on down to the last place team which receives two points.
