Dan Satter serves as Boston University's Associate Athletic Director for Marketing Communications. As a member of the department's senior staff, he oversees the department's external affairs including marketing, promotions, sports information, branding, licensing, broadcasting and multimedia. Satter joined the Terriers in October 2007 as an Assistant Athletic Director. Under his direction, BU has significantly expanded its radio, television and internet coverage over the last two years. Not only do the men's ice hockey and men's basketball teams have one consistent radio home in 50,000-watt WWZN-AM 1510 "The Zone," but the department also hosts on its flagship station a weekly hour-long magazine-style show, which airs before contests as an extended pre-game show and originates from the student union. Television coverage has increased as well, with as many as three dozen Terrier contests airing each year on national and regional stations. In 2008-09, BU Athletics streamed live more than 80 games in seven sports via BU All-Access. Since GoTerriers.com launched two years ago, the site has grown exponentially in page views, unique visitors and revenue generated, and incorporates social-networking platforms Facebook, Twitter and YouTube into the department's online efforts. The Terriers were recently cited for having one of the 12 best Twitter feeds in all of college athletics. Attendance at every sport the department markets has grown significantly over the last two years. A record-setting crowd of 5,935 attended the 2008 Terrier Tailgate men's soccer contest, the largest crowd to watch a college-soccer game in Massachusetts, and 4,963 set the women's college soccer record a year later. Terrier Rewards, an on-campus loyalty program launched for 2008-09, tripled student attendance in one year for basketball and Olympic sports. Satter also oversaw the profitable marketing efforts for the 2009 Women's Frozen Four held on campus at Agganis Arena. As the primary author and editor of the department's strategic plan, Terrier Pride: The Strategic Vision of the Boston University Department of Athletics, Satter wrote the introductory and closing sections, created its theme and oversaw its entire layout and production. He is one of six members of the department's strategic planning committee. Satter coordinated many details of the men's basketball head coaching search in March 2009 that landed Patrick Chambers, who was the associate head coach of Final Four participant Villanova. In addition, Satter has many administrative responsibilities within the department, including serving as the sport supervisor for five varsity teams: women's golf, men's and women's swimming and diving, and men's and women's tennis. His unit also oversees the cheerleading, dance and mascot teams, and works closely with the BU Band. Before BU, Satter served for three years as an Assistant General Manager for the Pitt ISP Sports Network at the University of Pittsburgh. His primary responsibility was selling corporate sponsorships, generating an account list with revenue in excess of $1.25 million annually. He was actively involved with the athletic department's marketing arm regarding game-day presentation and advertising -- including acquring trade on radio, television, print, billboards and bus shelters for the department's marketing outreach -- and sold the naming rights to the Petersen Events Center's club area. Prior to ISP Sports, Satter worked directly for the University of Pittsburgh's athletic department. He substantially grew its radio network in both its number of affiliates -- going from 12 to 21 in football and 1 to 10 in men's basketball -- and the length and quantity of broadcasts. Satter assisted with game presentation for football and men's and women's basketball as well. He also has worked for the University of North Carolina athletic department, and with Learfield Communications for one year in its Tar Heel Sports Marketing office. His work has won NACMA "Best of" Awards in 2007 (third place for single-game ticket sales promotion) and 2009 (first place for sponsorship). He was asked to present about branding and public relations at the 2009 NACMA Convention and the "NACMA on the Road" series at the ECAC Convention and Trade Show in October 2009. Satter received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina with a double-major in history and journalism and mass communication (with a news-editorial concentration). As an undergraduate, he served two years as a manager with the Tar Heel men's basketball program. He also earned a master's degree from UNC in Exercise and Sport Science with a concentration in sport administration while teaching undergraduate physical education courses. In December 2007, Satter received his master's in business administration from Carnegie Mellon University's Tepper School of Business, with concentrations in organizational behavior, marketing and strategy. A native of Framingham, Mass., Satter lives in Chestnut Hill with his wife, Sarah Bea, their daughter, Maggie, and their two (Yorkshire) Terriers, Webster and Ozzie. He has edited six books and is a member of the operating committee for the non-profit Manitou Experience. |
