BARSELL RADIO INTERVIEWS:
BU All-Access Radio Show Interview - November 4, 2010
Jenifer Barsell was hired as the Associate Athletic Director for Marketing Communications at Boston University in June 2010. In her role, Barsell oversees the athletic department's external affairs - including marketing, promotions, sports information, branding, licensing, broadcasting and multimedia. In addition, she serves as a member of the senior administration.
Prior to joining the Terriers, Barsell worked for the San Diego Padres for over 11 years leading all of the organization's marketing efforts. During her tenure at the Padres, Barsell oversaw record-setting marketing and branding initiatives that generated a franchise-best 3,016,752 season attendance in 2004 and the four highest attendance totals in the Padres' 40-year history. In total, the club exceeded 2,000,000 fans in each of her 11 full seasons with the organization after doing so only four times in the previous 29 years.
Barsell led the successful development and launch of all new Padres logos and uniforms in 2003, in conjunction with the team's move from Qualcomm Stadium to PETCO Park. She also served as a key liaison with Major League Baseball on events and initiatives supporting the first-ever World Baseball Classic in 2006 and again in 2009.
In addition to her tenure with Major League Baseball, Barsell also has experience working in the National Football League and prior work experience in college athletics. During 1997-98, she served as marketing coordinator for the San Diego Super Bowl Host Committee, while working for the San Diego Chargers as a private suite services assistant. In addition, she assisted with planning and executing corporate marketing initiatives for San Diego State University's athletic department while holding the title of corporate marketing assistant.
Barsell earned a Masters in business administration (marketing emphasis) in 1996 and a Bachelor of Science degree (accounting and finance concentrations) in 1994 from California State University, Chico. Prior to her work in sports marketing and communications, she worked in the accounting field for a short time.
Outside of work, the San Diego native and avid soccer player has devoted time to several local and national professional and non-profit organizations. Barsell was a board member for the San Diego Ad Club from 2009-10. She has also volunteered with the San Diego Foundation, worked with the Pacific South Coast Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society and served on various judging panels for the National Sports Forum annual awards.
