BU Today: Head of the Charles, the Super Bowl of Rowing
Video: The Perfect Rowing Stroke
BOSTON - Using BU's DeWolfe Boathouse as the starting point, the Boston University men's and women's rowing teams will compete this weekend at the 48th annual Head of the Charles Regatta. Former and current BU rowers along with members of the coaching staff will be competing during the two-day event.
Over 8,000 competitors from around the world will be competing in 55 events, and up to 300,000 spectators are expected to watch the races from the banks of the Charles River.
Last year, highlighted by the women's club four claiming the gold and the men's championship eight boat posting the fifth-fastest collegiate time, the Boston University men's and women's rowing programs earned a combined four top-10 finishes.
The entire BU men's coaching staff will compete on Saturday. Associate coach John Lindberg will kick off the festivities racing in the grand masters singles, followed by men's head rowing coach and former U.S. Olympian Tom Bohrer in the men's senior singles race at 8:54 a.m. Men's assitant coach Dave Padgett will join the fun when he rows with the BU alumni Wide Load Boat Club in the men's master eights at 2:49 p.m.
In between the two days of action, the Terriers will be hosting a reception at the DeWolfe Boathouse Saturday night, which will begin at 6 p.m. BU will be celebrating the 75th anniversary of men's crew at Boston University, and the women's rowing team will honor the 1983 Women's Eastern Sprints championship team. Click here to RSVP for the event or call Terrier Pride at (617) 353-1064.
In addition, BU will be hosting an Open House on Saturday along with a campus tour. Click here for more details and to RSVP.
