BOSTON - On Sunday Oct. 14, more than 100 Boston University student-athletes volunteered at the American Cancer Society's "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk" at the Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade.
The Terriers took on various responsibilities at the event which raises more than $3 million each year with over 40,000 walkers participating annually. The student-athletes arrived at the Esplanade and were the first to interact with the walkers and were responsible for registering participants, handing out forms, directing walkers and tracking donations brought in on the day of the event. In addition, members of the BU women's rowing team walked the course to help raise Breast Cancer Awareness.
The community service outreach project was organized by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). The American Cancer Society uses the annual event to raise awareness and donations in the fight against breast cancer.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the nation's oldest and largest one-day fundraiser. Organizers of the Walk said their goal is to bring the community together to support women who have had breast cancer, to emphasize the importance of early detection and to raise $3 million at the walk, which goes towards breast cancer research in the Boston area.
