Senior Andrea Walkonen was named the most valuable player of the 2008 Boston University women's cross country team as well as the 2008-09 Boston University women's indoor track and field team. Walkonen was named an All-American in both seasons, becoming the third Terrier in the last two years to earn the distinction twice in one academic year.
During the cross country season in the fall, Walkonen won the first three races she entered, including defending her titles in the New England and America East championships. The Jaffrey, N.H., native went on to finish second at the NCAA Northeast Regional and come in 21st at the national championship to capture All-America honors, the first BU runner to do so in cross country since 1997.
In the indoor track season, Walkonen was dominant again in distance races, winning both the 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter runs at the America East championship, capturing the Most Outstanding Track Performer award as she led the Terriers to their fourth consecutive conference crown. Walkonen qualified for the NCAA championship with her school-record time in the 5,000m run and bested that mark with an eighth-place finish at the national championship, clocking a 16:03.04.
