This summer, GoTerriers.com counted down the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes in 2008-09, one of the greatest years ever for Terrier athletics. This year's Terrier Twelve is listed below this story.
Coming in at the top spot of this year's Terrier Twelve is the men's ice hockey team's thrilling run to the 2009 NCAA title - the fifth in the storied program's history. In addition to winning every tournament they competed in, the Terriers swept all three major national awards. Senior Matt Gilroy became the second BU player to win the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, freshman goaltender Kieran Millan was the HCA National Rookie of the Year and head coach Jack Parker won the Spencer Penrose Award as the nation's top coach for the third time in his legendary career.
Trailing by two goals in the national championship game with under a minute left in regulation, the Terriers mustered a stunning rally against Miami to send the contest into overtime, where sophomore Colby Cohen scored the winner to lift BU to the 4-3 victory and secure the team's program-record 35th victory of the season.
BU captured the title at the season-opening Ice Breaker Invitational at Agganis Arena before going on to win the Denver Cup, the Beanpot and both the Hockey East regular-season and tournament titles to earn the top overall seed for the NCAA tournament.
After cruising to an 8-3 victory over Ohio State in the first round of the NCAAs, the Terriers reeled off three straight one-goal victories to win the national title. Senior Jason Lawrence sent BU to the Frozen Four for the first time since 1997 when he scored a power-play goal with just 14.4 seconds left in regulation to elevate the Terriers to a 2-1 victory over Hockey East rival New Hampshire in the NCAA Northeast Regional title game.
At the Frozen Four in the nation's capital, the Terriers faced another conference foe in Vermont in the national semifinals. After taking a 2-0 lead into the first intermission, the Terriers allowed the Catamounts to score three of the game's next four goals and were faced with a 4-3 deficit midway through the third period. Senior Chris Higgins knotted the game at 4-all at the 13:06 mark of the third before sophomore Colin Wilson scored the game winner with just 5:41 left in regulation.
The Terriers opened the year with wins in six of their first seven games, including victories over then-No. 5 North Dakota and then-No. 11 Michigan State in the Ice Breaker Invitational. After dropping two one-goal losses at home to Vermont on Nov. 21-22, BU went 21-1-4 over its next 26 games, capped by a 17-game unbeaten streak (14-0-3).
Gilroy and Wilson were two of the three Hobey Baker Hat Trick finalists and Gilroy became just the fifth player in college hockey history to win the national championship and the Hobey Baker in the same season.
Both Gilroy and Wilson were first-team All-Americans, while sophomore Kevin Shattenkirk earned second-team honors. Gilroy became the first defenseman in school history to be a three-time All-American. Gilroy and Wilson were named to the Hockey East All-Star First Team and Shattenkirk and Millan were both selected to the second team.
Wilson finished second in the nation in points with 55 on 17 goals and 38 assists, while fellow sophomore Nick Bonino, who sent the national title game into overtime when he scored with just 17.4 seconds left in regulation, finished with 50 points (18g, 32a). Millan was an impressive 29-2-3 in 35 starts and posted a 1.94 goals against average and a .921 save percentage.
